| Secure and reliable access to energy and water on Army installations is essential to its ability to deploy, fight, and win in a complex world. The Army installation objectives of maintaining world class training facilities, the ability to project power or surge the industrial base, and command and control are not achievable without secure and resilient access to energy and water. However, with rare exception, installations rely on commercial utilities outside the gate for energy and water. Today, there exist a number of energy security vulnerabilities, both natural and man-made, associated with interdependent electric power grids, natural gas pipelines, and water resources and systems, which often jeopardize installation security and mission capabilities. The same holds for campuses, industrial parks, and municipalities. |

Meet the Panel Hon Alex Beehler Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and the Environment. Mr. Beehler is the primary advisor to the Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff of the Army for all matters related to Army installation policy and oversight, and coordination of energy security and management. In addition, he is responsible for policy and oversight of sustainability and environmental initiatives and resource management. |
  Mr. J. E. “Jack” Surash is the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary (E&S) responsible for overall program direction, establishment of policies, development and refinement of strategies, and oversight for implementation of all programs and initiatives related to Energy Security and Sustainability within the Army.  Mr. Michael F. McGhee is the Executive Director of the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives and is responsible for large-scale renewable energy projects to bring energy security to Army installations leveraging private sector financing. |
 Jeffrey Marqusee – Moderator Dr. Marqusee is a senior research advisor at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). He has over 20 years of government technology and policy leadership. Previously, he served as the Executive Director of the DoD Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program. |
